Microchips — or…?

In Revelation 13:16–18 we find some intriguing and at the same time mysterious words, especially in verse 18: “Here is wisdom.” This passage deserves particular attention, because the apostle John states that wisdom is needed to understand what the mark signifies. But what exactly calls for such depth of reflection?

First of all, let us look at the word “mark” in verse 16 in the original Greek. In Greek it is χάραγμα (charagma), which means not merely a “seal” but a brand. And what is the function of a brand? Its main purpose is to show ownership. Branding livestock, for instance, indicates that the animals belong to a particular owner — which matters when they end up among other herds. A brand is an outward, visible sign that helps identify the owner.

Following this logic, the mark of Satan that John speaks of also points to ownership — to those who have willingly submitted to satanic influence. Being an outward sign, this mark must be visible to others. It is worth noting that modern theories about chips supposedly implanted under the skin as the “mark” fit this symbolism least of all, since chips are hidden from sight. A more fitting interpretation sees the mark as deeds and thoughts (on the hand and on the forehead) — an evident and open testimony of allegiance.

It is also interesting how the number 6 is written in Greek. It is ἕξ (hex), as anyone can easily check in a Greek interlinear or textbook. Beyond that, however, we need to consider the concept of the stigma. In ancient Greek society, στίγμα (stigma) was the brand burned onto the body of a slave or a criminal. This helps us grasp the meaning of the mark in Revelation more deeply: those who receive this brand become criminals in God’s eyes. And here a question arises: why does John not use the word “stigma” directly? The answer is probably hidden in the words “here is wisdom.” John calls his readers to reflect deeply and to understand the essence of what lies behind the symbolism of numbers.

Stigma was also used to write the number 6 in Greek. It is a ligature of the letters sigma and tau (Ϛ), and its use for the numeral 6 is attested in historical texts. Knowledgeable readers may therefore suppose that John chose this notation deliberately. The number 666 mentioned in verse 18 is directly connected with this symbol — the stigma, the brand of the slave and the criminal.

It should be said that many modern interpretations linking the mark of the beast to chips, barcodes or identification numbers do not stand up to scrutiny and are often based on a superficial reading of the text. A careful reading of Revelation 13 makes it clear that the mark is connected above all with worship. People will betray God and willingly submit to Satan, taking on his image and his way of thinking. The mark, then, will be a visible sign that they belong to the world of evil.

For believers, this means a need for patience and faith in order to resist this system and remain faithful to God, despite the apostasy of the majority. All attempts to explain the mark through modern technologies such as chips are groundless and often mislead people, drawing them away from the true meaning of the text.
